The fact that stress and your appearance go hand-in-hand is undeniable. Let's face it: When you're stressed out, the reflection staring back at you from the mirror looks a lot older! So is there any science behind your worn-out look? Is stress giving you wrinkles?

Is there a scientific link between stress and wrinkles?

I don't want to run the risk of boring you, but let's talk "science" for a minute. On the ends of our chromosomes are regions called telomeres. Every time a cell splits during mitosis (the way cells naturally divide and reproduce) a little bit of telomere is lost. When there isn't enough telomere left, the cell can't divide anymore, and it dies.

Naturally, the older we get, the more our cells have divided and the shorter our telomeres are. Here's the interesting part... researches have found that telomeres get shorter faster in people who have high amounts of stress. Hmm....

While these results support a link between stress and cellular aging, the exact relationship of stress on aging is complex and isn't yet fully understood. The most likely reason we develop wrinkles when we worry has to do with the lifestyle that accompanies stress. When we worry, we don't eat well, we exercise less, and we generally don't maintain a healthy sleep schedule, all of which can affect our appearance. Keeping these factors in check, even when you're worrying, can help keep you looking healthy... and pretty!

Say goodbye to stress.

We are in week 9 of our 90 Days to Your Best Body challenge. During the past 8 weeks we have talked a lot about how taking better care of our bodies is the key to becoming our best version of ourselves. We've talked about "Challenging Our Body" through exercise and "Nourishing Our Body" with vitamins and healthy eating habits. We've discussed the importance of "Hydrating Our Body" and "Resting Our Body"... but did you know all of those things do more than help us look and feel our best? Take a look at how these tips also help us "De-stress Our Body":

  • Give your body care and attention with exercise...yes, exercise is a stress reliever!
  • Keep yourself hydrated... it keeps your body and mind fresh and clear.
  • Eat balanced, healthy and proper diet... a healthy body is a stress-free body.
  • Get at least 8 hours of sound sleep...rest energizes your brain and body.

Say goodbye to stress-related wrinkles!

Forehead wrinkles are called "worry lines" for a reason! When we make the same facial expression repeatedly, temporary lines are produced on our face. We all know that stress causes us to frown quite a bit, which causes temporary forehead lines.

Temporary expression lines on the face go by many names: forehead wrinkles, worry lines, frown lines, crows feet -- but here's a shocker for you, those temporary lines can eventually turn into permanent lines!

Oh no! What's a girl to do?

KEEP CALM - GET BOTOX!
How to prevent temporary lines from becoming permanent.

It's a fact, repeated use of Botox® can help prevent and permanently reduce wrinkles.

As with all wrinkle prevention, it is important to stay out of the sun and use skin protection. (We talked about "Protecting Our Body" in week 8!) You should also be following a regular daily skin care regimen. And yes, you need to be aware of the facial expressions you make regularly. Look in the mirror sometime and pay attention where your face creases and wrinkles when you make various expressions and it will give you an idea of where wrinkles could potentially develop as you age. Did you know that it may be possible to retrain your face to relax a little bit more? Botox® can help!

How does Botox® work?

The science behind Botox® is simple. It blocks nerve impulses by relaxing the contraction of muscles. This causes the muscle to no longer be able to contract. Wrinkles will relax and soften. Patients see cosmetic improvement within two to four days and the effects last anywhere from four to six months. The majority of patients will need to seek re-treatment in order to remove wrinkles and lines once they reappear. With each injection, the wrinkles return less severely as the muscles are retrained to relax.

Botox® procedures are outpatient procedures and can be performed rather quickly. The protein is injected into the muscle. Patients are recommended to avoid alcohol one week before the procedure. Patients are also recommended to stop using aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medications two weeks prior to treatment to help minimize bruising.

Don't stress!

I know darling, that's much easier said than done. The truth is, I need to be taking my own advice. If stress burned calories, I'd be a super model... but it doesn't! As I get older, I am trying to learn to choose to be calm a midst the chaos of my life, and I'll take all the help I can get!
