I grew up in the "Before" era. Before airbags, before nutrition labeling and before we were told excessive tanning was not healthy, even if it made us glow like Farrah Fawcett. It was the 1970s, the era of living dangerously. We rode in cars without seat belts, took bike rides without helmets and played outside for hours on end without sunscreen.

Things didn't change much in the 80s. As a teenager I would slather my body in baby oil and iodine and lay out all day in the sun... because being "tan" wasn't good enough. I wanted to be the most tan. The tannest. The queen of the tan. Tanny McTanface. Wow...who knew?

Week 6: Hydrate Your Body - The Ultimate Beauty Treatment

I turned 48 this week. FOURTY-EIGHT. (Insert crying-face emoji here.) Birthdays have always been my favorite, but I have to say, there are a lot of things about getting older that are starting to take away some of my birthday enthusiasm! Things like thinning hair, dull splotchy skin, weight gain... I could go on and on. I have a deep respect for women who embrace aging along with all of it's not-so-great side effects, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I am going to fight it as long as I can. I am not above Botox or any other aesthetic cosmetic treatment that can help push pause on the clock. In fact, I have recently started a new series of skin treatments called Laser 360 that I am in LOVE with! Ba-bye sun damage, age spots and fine lines! (I'll be sure to write about my experience with Laser 360 once I've completed the series.) 

Modern aesthetic treatments are a great way to help keep things in check, but the best way to fight aging is to take care of our bodies. Sticking to an exercise program isn't easy. Even the best-laid plans often get derailed by life. (Work, family, illnesses, bad hair days.) We can't control everything, but we sometimes make exercise harder than it has to be, putting obstacles in our own paths without even realizing it. We come home after a long day of sitting in a chair to de-stress by sitting in another chair. Sometimes finding the motivation to take a walk or hit the gym can be as much of a challenge as the workout itself!

Sure, everyone says to "make time for what's important to you," but oversimplification doesn't make the struggle any easier.

We talk a lot about having it all, living a balanced life, and so on, but there's one major time suck in our lives that hardly ever enters into these conversations.

I was reading an article in Cosmopolitan about how much time women invest in their daily beauty rituals. According to Cosmo, we spend an average of 72 days over the course of our lifetimes simply shaving our legs! That's 1,728 hours of bending over and balancing our heels on the slick side of the tub to sever unsightly hair from our bodies.

Apparently, the women polled voted leg-shaving as their number one most hated body maintenance activity, yet they admitted that this fact doesn’t stop them from dragging a razor over their bodies at least three days a week. (Only three?) I personally shave my legs, (and other lady parts) every time I am in the shower. Yes. Every. Single. Time.
