Invest in Your Body

We talk a lot about having it all, living a balanced life, and so on, but there's one major time suck in our lives that hardly ever enters into these conversations.

Our beauty routines.

I was reading an article in Cosmopolitan about how much time women invest in their daily beauty rituals. According to Cosmo, we spend an average of 72 days over the course of our lifetimes simply shaving our legs! That's 1,728 hours of bending over and balancing our heels on the slick side of the tub to sever unsightly hair from our bodies.

Apparently, the women polled voted leg-shaving as their number one most hated body maintenance activity, yet they admitted that this fact doesn’t stop them from dragging a razor over their bodies at least three days a week. (Only three?) I personally shave my legs, (and other lady parts) every time I am in the shower. Yes. Every. Single. Time.

It’s true, hairless skin is desirable and aesthetically pleasing.

This applies to both women AND men. (Oh yes, men have grooming rituals too, but man-scaping is another conversation.) The fact is, we all find it difficult to keep up with the time-consuming, ineffective hair removal treatments that we've performed our whole lives in the hopes of maintaining a hairless body. Even Kim Kardashian is not immune! She hasn’t exactly been shy about her hair-related issues (or any of her issues, for that matter). It’s no secret that she has “lasered everything.” At least that’s what she told Oprah. She then went on to describe just how extensive her beauty routine is, calling it a “job.” I can only imagine how much time she spends on her eye-makeup alone, so kudos to her for getting rid of body hair.

Hair removal doesn't need to be so challenging. Laser Hair Removal to the rescue!

Laser hair removal is one of the fastest-growing methods of ridding the body of unwanted hair. The appeal of laser hair removal stems from its effectiveness, efficiency and convenience. It can be performed virtually anywhere on the body where you experience unwanted hair growth. Another reason for its popularity is that laser hair removal can result in permanent reduction of the hair. It is, however, important for you to understand exactly what “permanent hair reduction” means in the laser hair removal industry. It does not mean 100 percent reduction for the rest of your life, but rather 50 to 95 percent reduction. New hair may appear over time, but in most cases it is finer, easier to manage hair. Of course, target treatments can always be performed later to remove these finer hairs.

How Laser Hair Removal Works.

Laser and IPL systems use energy in the form of light to denature the blood supply to the hair follicle. The energy from the light source is absorbed by the pigment, called melanin, which gives hair its color. The hair rapidly absorbs this filtered light and transfers it to the surrounding cells, which in turn convert it into heat. This heating denatures the cells, rendering them incapable of producing further hair growth. In other words, the laser beam is attracted to the dark brown pigment in the center of the hair follicle. When the hair follicle is heated, the growth center of the hair is destroyed and the skin remains unaffected.

During the session, many compare the feeling of the laser's pulse to the snap of a rubber band. Over the course of the next 1-3 weeks, the treated hair falls out. The process requires a series of treatments, but results can be seen after just the first time, proving how effective even just the initial treatment can be. With every treatment you'll progressively see fewer and fewer hairs return. Finishing the entire series of treatments is crucial, as that ensures that you see the highest degree of permanent hair reduction.

Two of the biggest mistakes people make when getting Laser Hair Removal:

Two of the biggest mistakes people make when getting Laser Hair Removal are not seeing someone who is licensed or certified with experience, and not coming back enough times to complete the full treatment.

1. Laser hair removal shouldn’t be performed by just anyone. It may be a “cosmetic treatment,” but laser hair removal is a medical procedure, so you should only trust someone who is specifically licensed to perform the treatment and who has plenty of experience doing so. At Cosmetic Laser Center, all laser services are performed by a Texas registered laser professional. And, Cosmetic Laser Center has 20 years of laser hair removal experience.  All of this is important in both seeing results and reducing the risk of complications.

2. It takes several treatments to see results from laser hair removal, so complete your treatment!

Each of your hairs grows in a three-part cycle with a growth phase, a dormant phase, and a shedding phase, and the hairs’ cycles don’t all match up. Laser hair removal only works on hairs that are in the growth phase, so several treatments are needed in order to catch the growth phase in as many hairs as possible. For most people, a series of around six treatments will get the best results, but it varies from one person to the next.

Two of the biggest reasons why Laser Hair Removal is an Investment that Pays Off.

While traditional methods such as waxing, tweezing and shaving are effective for removing the hair, they do not provide long-term solutions for hair removal – never mind all those bumps, nicks and ingrown hairs! Choosing laser hair removal over other techniques has many advantages.

1. You will save time. (Remember people, 72 days of your life are spent shaving!) Laser hair removal treatments are quicker than you might expect. For example, it only takes about 20 minutes to perform a treatment on the underarm and Brazilian area.

2. You will save money in the long run. With the permanent reduction of hair, you no longer need to purchase endless razors, shaving cream, depilatory creams, and you will no longer need to have monthly waxing appointments. The cost of laser hair removal has decreased as the cost of waxing has increased. The results are far superior to waxing and the cost, over time, is much less.

It's true, our beauty routines can be time consuming and expensive.

I spend over $100 every six weeks at the hair salon, and $45 every three weeks at the nail salon($90 if I get my toes done). The way I look at it, my body is something I will have the rest of my life, it's worth investing in! There are certain parts of my beauty routine I simply can not imagine giving up. But if I can give up shaving and still have smooth, hairless skin I'm all for it! Maybe it’s time to ditch the razor for the laser?
